If you are forced to do a five mile hack on an arena, with one mile at trot and one at canter in each direction, then you really could not ask for a better horse to do it on than Radar. You set him going, and  he keeps going, and going, until you tell him to stop. Pretty much all you have to do is sit there and hold the reins. I didn't even have a whip, it is buried somewhere in a snowdrift :)

In the unlikely event that we get to the meet on Saturday, at least he will be halfway fit enough. I was glad that I felt forced to get out there in the cold and wind, because I actually thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was so cold, though, that when I stripped his rug off to tack him up, Radar started to shiver. Since he's actually put on a little weight during the cold break from work, it wasn't lack of food making him cold.

His work has improved beyond belief almost. OK it took four years, but his transitions are really getting quite good, up and down. He has canter/walk and walk/canter, and the trot transitions are now more often an upward step instead of our customary headlong dash. I'm going to carry on getting him going in a snaffle once the weather warms up again, and then we'll see whether he can do it in a test arena, because his paces really are very smart!

  1. Catching up again. Radar is a gem. I know it took a while, but his progress is amazing, considering he really had no training at all when you got him. So, he's really just a four year old!! *G*

As for the snow blowers...bummer. Around here, they use plows mostly because blowers would probably put the snow right on top of people's houses.

It's hard for towns to budget for snowfall since the weather is so unpredictable. But you'd think wise heads would put some money aside in case of emergency. Diggers will take twice as long, if not longer to clear the roads and, as you note, the chances for damage is much greater.

Wish things were better for you. Still an outside chance for the hunt, but it doesn't sound too promising. Sorry about that.

    1. The weather is predictable at this height Jean. our problem is that three years ago, the offices from where our services are managed moved from 5 miles away to 50 miles away. The service has degraded year by year in the subsequent three years, The new "local" authority simply doesn't care about the tiny proportion of the area for which it is responsible which is above the snow line.

Sh is about to write a letter to our MP, because this is now totally ridiculous. There is no snow anywhere at all but on our road, and this afternoon they sent a bucket digger to dig us out when it is impossible for him to turn in the lane and dump what he has in the bucket, so it has taken him hours and he has got only half way.

I am really getting angry about it now, the refusal to spend money on capital equipment is resulting in a huge spend on driver hours for using the wrong equipment. And it is the only thing preventing me from hunting on Saturday and from getting Woody out of here. His behaviour tonight was bizarre. He is no longer particulary interested either in food or in the company of the others. I need him gone.
