Mary Lou knows exactly what I mean when I say what a joy it is to ride a horse who really wants to go forward. Radar is such a fun hack these days. I just jump on and he's off as soon as he is allowed, and he doesn't stop until he is told to. No nagging to go forwards, a tiny encouragement, if any, and up the pace goes. And he seems to really enjoy it as well. What a partner :-)
We did a good stiff hack with lots of hill work, that should have sharpened up his fitness for the second to last meet of the season on Saturday. It's close to home, so it should be really good fun.
But what is going on with the weather??? It's the third week of March but we still have several minus degrees C at night, and only a couple of degrees above zero in the daytime. I'm STILL in winter breeches, three jumpers and two coats. For goodness sake!!!!
I gave Ace the day off and will ride him tomorrow if it isn't raining or snowing too hard!

Chance is that was out on a hack...not so much in the arena. He's the only horse I've ever had that goes faster on the way out than coming back home. I always get the feeling he'd rather stay out instead. Gotta love one like that. Radar must be really fun to ride!
ReplyDeleteWinter keeps coming back here too. Cold and windy this morning but it gave way to sunny and "thinking of warmer." May have another storm coming through just after the weekend. Spring just doesn't want to come.
I have to keep reminding myself of the benefits to keep sane at the moment.
DeleteA. The boys are out full time because the grass is not growing.
B. At least it's dry.
C. The days are getting longer.
D. Ummm.....

I certainly do! And I am thoroughly spoiled by now. It really makes a difference to ride a horse that feels as if he is a partner, just as enthusiastic as you are. We explore together, improve our tests together, learn or remember new subtle techniques. This to both Jean and Caroline - Tetley marches right out while hacking but slows his feet on the way back. He loves to explore!
ReplyDeleteApparently we are in for a 15F (-9C) night Sunday. So spring comes and goes here too. Mostly we are plagued with wind in spring.
He is one of a very small balm of horses I have known who will march on past the gate when he gets home and try to carry on the hack. Even Radar doesn't do that!

Balm? I have a new tablet with predictive text as you can see!
