Isn't it odd how you just lose your brain sometimes? I was riding Ace today and he set in the left canter. He was stuck, somewhere in his body. Now I know full well that the way to resolve this is either to stop and start again, or to put him long and low. It is NOT to push him on with my seat. That is guaranteed to cause a buck or two.
So why did I do it? Who knows???
Six bucks in a tight circle later, I did what I should have done in the first place. Stopped and started again, taking a light seat until he could hold the canter with my weight fully in the saddle.
We got quite a good session done with canter, trot, canter on a circle, some canter to walk, and some very nice trot lengthening. Backing up is also getting a lot better. He was making it fairly obvious that he wanted to nap back to the stables at times, in true spring fashion, but I got only the mildest of grumbles when I would not let him.
On the whole, he was a good boy!

Sometimes instinct and habit kick in before the brain has time to think. Your "new" approach to handling Ace's tantrums/silliness still isn't habit. Just give yourself time. It's pretty clear Ace is going to do a good job of reminding you.
