We got home in time for me to ride Radar after a nice little break. . I don't know if he missed me, but he was quite a good boy, for him.... we had a normal dispute about how fast and furious the walk and the trot were going to be. But he did some super walk to canter transitions and beautiful canter work. Definitely the best transitions and canter he has ever done.
I did a few minutes with Ace. He was no problem, though he was a bit flicky with his tail. I'm going to have to start ignoring it, I think, because it certainly doesn't seem to indicate that he's in any pain.
I rode him 40 metres, twice. On the second run, I decided to stop him and start off again. He stamped a foot when I stopped. I made him stand, risking upsetting him, but I felt that it was the right thing to do. He was fine, and walked off nicely again. He has so much movement in his back I am wondering what his trot is like. I'll find out soon, it's our first hack tomorrow!!

Memory of pain will take time to forget, he'll need to build up confidence in you again. Your programme of small steps and no pressure should do the trick I would think.
ReplyDeleteBless Radar for showing he missed you.
Enjoy the hack!

I'm taking SH with me, walking away from home and riding back,, so that there is no chance of mistaking napping back to home as pain.

a good plan
ReplyDeleteI thought so :-)

Love Radar's enthusiasm for all things demanding movement! He may want to move his way instead of yours, but he certainly wants to move! *lol*
ReplyDeleteSounds as if your plans for Ace are perfect. As long as SH doesn't mind the extra exercise, it should be a good experiment. I'm cheering you on from afar.
SH is lame, and unfortunately will be in a vehicle :-)

Radar makes me laugh, with his fast and furious walk. But how nice that you got such a good canter. It's my favorite gait!
ReplyDeleteWhen I see super nice and expensive horses move, I wonder if I could even ride them as they have so much movement at the trot and canter. I wonder what Ace will be like now that his back doesn't hurt.
I'm wondering that too :-)
