Me, not the boys. I'm crippled if I sit down, I just can't get up again. I did it yesterday sitting on the floor crewing Ace's saddle back together after widening the gullet, but it's much worse today. I've spent the day either standing or lying flat, when it's no problem.
I couldn't risk riding so I stuck Radar on the lunge and he exercised himself with twenty solid minutes of trot and canter. I only have to loop the lunge line in one finger, and turn on the spot.
I also put the saddle on Ace again,, and lunged him for ten minutes. His back is soft and squishy and he is moving better every day. I had the girth done up tighter today and he was unconcerned about it being put on. When he trotted off, though, he was looking back at the site of the wounds, and only did it on the one side.
I think we can conclude that the tighter girth pulled the saddle down more onto the scars and he can feel them. I wouldn't say he was in any pain or even particularly irritated. It was more of a 'what's that odd feeling? I expect it will wear off pretty soon. I certainly won't be getting on him until it does.
The other thing I am also watching for at the moment is any return of ulcer symptoms. Once he had returned to a normal routine and I was sure that he was also pain free, I weaned him off the omeprazole. In theory, he should not need it any more, but we will see.

Oh, I feel your pain. My back goes out too, so I really understand. Sometimes Valerian will ease the muscle spasms. I go to a wonderful chiropractor for my symptoms. Works a treat!
ReplyDeleteIf my knee scars are any example, they can just feel strange--sort of semi-numb and sensitive at the same time. Massage should help even more.
Gotta admire a horse that exercises himself the way Radar does. He has endless energy and a desire to use it. What a fun boy he is.
I will get a video, his entusiasm to move just screams out!

I am hoping that today was the worst day for your strain. The second day is often the worst so expect some relief tomorrow! What a strange injury to get just from sitting on the floor.
ReplyDeleteI guessRadar just likes to move. Does he tend to run around by himself in the field? a lot?
I injured myself being bucked off a horse I went to try a few years ago, and this happens every now and then when I sit wrong for too long.
DeleteRadar has a real mad day once in a while where he just gallops flat out from the bottom of the field to the top, turns and goes back down again. He keeps that up for ten minutes until he is dripping in sweat and then stands there wild-eyed saying 'my goodness that was fun!!!'

I love it! Radar's attitude
