First meet with scent

We had the first meet with scent laid today. It's not really a lot different from the hound exercise meets, except the checks are longer to allow the runner to lay the next leg, and as I was feeling a bit unsociable today, and my back ached sitting waiting, this was not a bonus.

But Radar was on form, and we got a really nice build up of a half dozen  smallish hedges, before a few serious ones. He flew them all, and someone who has never seen him before commented on how well he was going.

We forded the river five or six times today and as well as a good number of beautifully dressed hedges making it clear where it was safe to jump, with three different heights, there was a lot of rolling grassland and not much road work.

I only had one problem. My gloves were slipping on the sweaty reins so I looped the reins round my hands.  Stupidly, I then jumped a wide hedge with a bit of a drop.

He stuck his head out to balance for the landing, and took me with him. Somewhat luckily he then threw his head up, biffing me  in the face, but also putting me back in the saddle. Close one!!!

A different pair of gloves next week I think, don't you?

  1. Ooh my! Close call. Yes, better gloves and perhaps a set of non-slip reins?? There are some that are not bulky and work well with rubber grippy stuff.

Glad you came out of that one OK.

    1. I've got rubberized reins Jean, it was all the sweat on them and a pair of worn gloves :(
