Jumping Jack Flash took me out for a hack this morning. He's popping out of his socks with fitness, all we need to do now is to take him and get his jumping muscles fit. One of those trips can be the third of September when we deliver Ace to hospital. The first meet is the following Saturday. We'll get one in before the September as well, when we get a nice day and feel like it. It was to be today but foul weather was forecast so we stayed home.
As it turns out, the rain has only just arrived at six o'clock. I just managed to get on Ace before it started, but messed the timing up a bit and it was already spitting. I got up in the yard and then rode him onto the arena. He did flick his tail once when I did the girth up, and when I sat in the saddle he picked up his hind feet. Those are both bad signs normally but he didn't appear to have any tension under the saddle. He went out onto the arena easily enough but he made it perfectlty clear that he didn't want to work in the rain and I agreed with him, to be honest.
I rode him round in walk only long enough to make it clear that it was my decision to stop and not his, and got off.
It's wild outside now, but I have still put his muzzle on. I can't take any risks at this stage. He got it off last night at some point, and just as I went through the gate to go and search 12 acres for it I luckily suddenly thought that I should look in the barn - and there it was :-) My lucky day.

Lucky indeed. Around here it always seems that once something like that it lost, it's lost until I get a new one and then find it weeks later.
ReplyDeleteDon't blame Ace for not wanting to work in the rain. Who does?
As for "Jack Flash," you are going to have one exciting hunting season with him this year. He is more than ready to go!
Just a bit worried how strong he's going to be until he settles, Jean
