Ace's issues are only with working indoors. It was a glorious late summer day today and we rode on the arena. He was fantastic, more relaxed than he has ever been. His walk to canter was a complete dream, I have never had a horse learn it even twice as quickly as he has.
I'm sure he will get used to being indoors over time, but it does make him terribly tense at the moment, poor boy. I am hoping to ride outdoors more this winter. I am taking quotes for draining my surface and putting a fibre topping on which will be much more rideable in the wetter weather. I've also asked for a quote to extend it to 60metres, but I'm sure that will cost and arm and a leg!
Radar and I went for a long but not strenuous hack, just to get his back used to being sat on for longer periods. He has calmed down such a lot since he has been back in regular work and we enjoyed the sunshine together. We are both looking forward to Saturday, I hope the weather holds.

I'm sure Ace will adjust, eventually. It could well be he's the kind of horse that worries when he is inside because he can't see what's going on outside. My former trainer used to say horses often preferred to be outside in bad weather because then they could see the danger and have the freedom to flee. Ace may just have a strong flight instinct.
ReplyDeleteWhich sort of goes along with his ulcer issue, I should think. He's a worrier. Age, confidence and your consistent, firm training should help that a lot.
I would not say this of many horses, but I suspect Radar is looking forward to the weekend too!
