Next!

Radar's next bit to test is a Liverpool cherry roller that arrived in the post today, crossing with the complete failure, the Pee Wee in the post on its way back. I've done one very short test today and it seemed really effective, so fingers crossed for tomorrow!  The principle is that the cherry rollers will roll instead of biting into his mouth. We'll see. He did himself a lot of damage with the jointed pelham last week and the bruises are only just going to be settled enough to take him tomorrow. If the curb chain didn't sit lower down too, I would not be able to use one, because it has bitten into his chin and left him scabs. The new bit sits the chain well below the damage, thankfully. I'm pretty much at the end of the road if this bit does not stop him hurting himself :-(

I hacked Jazz out this morning. Lovely. And Ace this evening. Pillock. He was frightened by car headlights but I guess he has never seen cars with eyes before? He was whipping round and running away from them, but we got past with a little encouragement.

The hunt tomorrow is close to home, which will be nice. It should be a good one, there are plenty of hedges where we are going. I hope the weather holds good!

  1. I am trying to think of the bit my friend's nephew used on an ex race polo pony, it was a pelham type but very unusual in it's design with a tongue plate, I also think it could be used in different ways. If I think of the name I will let you know. There is also the Myler combination and I know some people that use a hackamore as well as a bit with two separate reins.

Looks like the most bizarre bit ever.

  3. He hunted in a mikmar all last season Tracey, though with the nose piece removed as it made him bolt and did no good. I used it with a curb chain instead. He still split his mouth :-( but was easily controllable.

This season I put it on him and his top tushes were bashing onto the bit , which is over an inch wide. He has a small mouth and I couldn't raise it high enough to avoid the tushes, hence the search this season for a new bit.

The myler combination won't work because of the nose pressure, that he simply does not respond to.

Anyway, success today, about to post that I think we have found a bit, but thanks for all the suggestions!
