Of washing mud off leather Radar's bridle and breastplate after hunting. It never seems to come properly clean, then it has to dry in the air, then it goes stiff and has to be oiled to make it fit to use again.
So I have taken the bull by the horns, and will risk the raised eyebrows from the traditional hunting field when I hunt him in this, with a matching breastplate:

I think that it will suit him, what do you think?
I had a fun morning. Campero's people came up and we hacked out. Chris (novice) on Radar. Joanne on Jazz and me on Ace, who hasn't been ridden for more than a week and was very on his toes! It was windy, but the sun was shining and they really enjoyed themselves.

I bet they enjoyed going hacking together - usually their time together is in the field/barn. Do you think they were all braver because they were together?
ReplyDeleteJazz was definitely braver for following Radar. Radar was his normal self and we had to put him at the back to stop Ace trying to catch him up. Ace still tried to turn for home twice, in spite of being with the others. He clearly trusts no-one but himself, or he just loves being at home!

I was going to suggest biothane. Some of the brands actually look like leather, so who'd know?
ReplyDeleteThe heck with tradition when practicality becomes the necessity.
All three out? That must have been some ride. But with Radar in the lead, I suppose everyone was braver. (The monsters will eat him first!!!)
I just remembered. You need a "pink". A friend of mine described this as a vulnerable creature at the lead. Husbands work well for this. The horses need not worry as the saber toothed tiger will get the "pink" and leave the horses alone :-)
ReplyDeleteOMG you bought and endurance bridle......... at least it wasn't a bright blue one LOL
ReplyDeleteI know, mandeigh. The shame will stay with me forever. Don't tell anyone, but I've had them before, about 20 years ago!
ReplyDeleteJazz would like a full time pink ML :-)
We eventually had to put Radar at the back going home ML, both Ace and Jazz were cantering to keep up with his walk !!

I was dreading something "pink" when I clicked on the link, but was pleasantly surprised, I reckon it looks good, go for it.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a fun hack together, very windy here, not safe for hacking!
even I wouldn't dare hunt in a pink bridle :-)
ReplyDeleteNot that Radar would consent to have it anywhere near his head!!!
VERY windy here all day - car nearly blown off the road.

I am too trad for biothane ;-) Leather all the way for me, even on Exmoor, and even when I have 3 sets of filthy wet tack post hunting...but I swear by Effax leather soap - gets mud off, leaves everything looking and feeling fine (and flexible).
ReplyDeletePS: Got some FAB waterproof jods for Xmas - still trialling but they are the business for hunting in the wet ;-)
Have to admit I don't know if I'm brave enough to use it yet!
