Sonia rang! So I am taking both of them to her mothers, where we used to train, the week after next. No one will ever understand Jazz like Sonia does, so I am really pleased that she is happy to continue to train us. It's good news, and I am really happy about it.
Ace is footie. He has the muzzle on at night, but he is more footie now than he was before the muzzle AND I am having trouble keeping weight on him. Something is not right, and he has not eaten his haylage today. I have just offered him the lower quality haylage instead and he is eating that. I might have to get hold of some hay, if I can, because he seems to know that he needs more fibre.
When I say he is footie, he is fine on flat tarmac, iti s only on the stones that you can tell, so there is no emergency. But the other two are completely fine on the same stones, so he is not as good as he could be and I want to sort it out. I have got activagted charcoal from my friend up the road, and I have ordered him his own supply, recommended by Lucy, thanks Lucy :-) I also have a vit/min mix coming with yeasacc and a prebiotic bug in it, which I hope will help as well.
I can only put down the difference to one of two things
- that I have been unable to feed them brewer's yeast for a month because the stuff I was sent is completely unpalatable.
- that the muzzle has restricted his access to the longer woodier grass and he has been eating too much of the shorter sugary stuff, because that is what will go through the hole. The muzzle will be off tonight, because even if it is not the cause, it does not appear to have helped. And it has started to rub the sides of his face too.
I knew before I bought him that his feet would be an issue, so this is not a major worry, just a fiddle while we sort out what he needs.

You should have been a scientist Caroline - you have the common sense to know how to control "experiments" and test hypotheses. I love that sort of thing - it's satisfying to figure something out for yourself.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your last show. How great that Ace was so improved and that all the peripheral challenges went well too. Having had just a little experience on that front I know now how much work it all it.
Two horses with the same trainer is such a good idea. It's efficient with your time and use of the lorry, though I bet you will be tired after two lessons in a row. Don't forget coffee that morning :-)
Bit of a worry there, with Ace, but I am confident if anyone can solve the riddle, it's you.
ReplyDeleteGreat news about Sonia. It all seems to be happening at just the right time, too. SH well on the mend, and Jazz just waiting for some new exercises to entertain you both.
Great news about Sonia, I thought it was a no as it was a while ago that you approached her. I know you'll enjoy getting back to lessons with her, and she's gonna love Ace eh?
ReplyDeleteSorry about the footy issue, I struggle with this, but I just pop on boots when it happens. I have limitations on what I can achieve diet wise.
Cancelled my ODE again today, very cold and rainy here, got the horses in and they were all shivering and very cross with me - oops. Sometimes you just have to know when to quit!
I think the good thing, Jean, is that this is no surprise. I read his feet before we paid for him, and this is what I read. If it had come out of the blue I would be very upset.
ReplyDeleteTracey - discretion/valour etc. Good decision again! Shame you lost your event but it is truly FOUL here and no-one in their right minds would want to do one dressage test in it, never mind SJ and XC too, plus the waiting.

ML I got A's in all my science O-levels and my teachers were made as hell when I said I wanted to do English French and German A levels! I just found science too easy and literature and languages much more satisfying. (couldn't stomach physics though, and not that good at traditional maths either!)
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think you'd be surprised to know that I test in the top 1% of the country for critical reasoning, would you :-) ?? Not a boast, just a fact. My employers once had me tested with Watson Glaser for a job application.

mad as hell, not made as hell :)
