Inner/outer hoof wall separation
Buttie in his summer plumage. He's a beautifully made little man, it's no surprise that he was from a showing stud. It was a devil of a job to get him to stay away from me so I could take the photo! And Ace has been dressing his hair with haylage for him :-) To me, in some lights, he has an almost mauve colouring with bitter chocolate legs and face.
This is Jazz's spavin. It's a complete mystery to me how a horse can grow a spavin of this size over several years, how it can be warm and active all the time, and how he is completely sound, even when you do a flexion test. I can only assume that the joint is completely fused and that this is simply a cosmetic lump, but what a cracker!
And this is a bad photo of inner/outer hoof wall separation that Ace got today. You can see the split beginning at the crack top/slightly right and continuing left to the yellowy seed stuck to his foot. The white line is just inside the bit of straw and this is almost a life-size photo. The split you can see is between unpigmented inner hoof wall and pigmented outer hoof wall on Ace's toe. The outer wall is brittle and unconnected to the inner and splits off. I will rasp this back later to stop any fungal infection getting hold in a nice dark crevice.

Buttie does have nice conformation and I too love his color.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, that is a big spavin. But physical soundness says a lot more than what you see. Very curious, but if Jazz doesn't care, I guess it's all OK.
As for Ace's hoof, I am not enough of an expert to comment, but I have every confidence in your skill to assess and take good care of that issue. I have a feeling that, as you have noted, this is the last of his old hoof to grow out. He should be showing some good solid foot after a few more trims.
Hey, that's a bad photo alright, I can't see enough to make any response!!!
ReplyDeleteButtie has a lovely round bum and very nice colour.x
Aw, Buttie is so scrummy! Just catching up - baby was finally born last Tuesday (11 days late) so I've not been in the land of the living. Next we need pics of Radar working in those draw reins...
