Woody is completely sound and did a very nice, gentle schooling session. I have to admit that I am feeling quite triumphant about this. Four years on and off lame, and now he can hunt for three hours in mud, cornering at speed (his speed, not mine!!), jumping, slipping and sliding and be perfectly sound. I's a sham ehe kicked himself behind and gave us all some doubt for 48 hours, but hey, he's a horse!
Ace and I had a hack out in the snow banked lanes. He was spooky but good, and had to pass a tractor, a car, and a landrover towing a trailer full of fencing materials in the narrow gap between the snow and the vehicle. The car even had to pull in its wing mirror.
He was even better when I got off to have a wee. I went to get back on, pushed against the bank that I was stood on, my foot shot down into the snow, the saddle slipped, and I slid right underneath him onto the ice. He was shocked and stepped back onto my leg, but as soon as he realised it was me, he took his weight off as quickly as he possibly could, and then stood as good as gold while I slipped about between his legs trying to stand up. He could have seriously hurt me, or simply run away in fright, but he did neither. He is growing up by the day!
I have a bruise, but by rights I should have a broken leg. It's my lucky day :-)

that must have been scary!
ReplyDeleteI might show you the bruise tomorrow Claire :-) My own stupid fault, but very scary for a moment as I watched his foot go down onto my shin bone !!

Woody would have run away. Radar probably wouldn't have reacted quickly enough to get his extra weight off my leg. Ace was just marvellous.

Three cheers for a sound Woody. You have done wonders and he has repaid your efforts with the promise of so much rewarding riding to come.
ReplyDeleteAs for Ace. Wow! First that he was quiet with all those distractions at hand, but better yet, sensible and quick thinking enough to save you from some potentially serious injury. Try some ice ON the leg instead under your slipped body. You lucked out on this one.
It IS your lucky day! Jean, you made me laugh with your comment to put ice on the leg rather than under. ANd that land rover pulling the fencing must have worried Ace; amazing that he tolerated it. How much he has gained lately!!!!
ReplyDeleteThere was a dog inside the landrover too, ML, scrabbling at the walls and barking at him (no windows so he couldn't see what it was either. I gave him a long rein and he shuffled past very slowly.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, I remember Jean, ice ON injuries, not under my bum. OK. :-)

Still giggling...
